Talking Hockey…Always Talking Hockey, Prospectus

by Ryan Wagman

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss hockey and the annual on a few platforms.

On Friday evening, I had a , short chat with Laurence Holmes, of 670, The Score, in Chicago. You can fast forward to the last ten minutes or so of the podcast for my portion. In it, we discuss the annual, the Blackhawks last season and some things to watch for this season.

On Sunday evening, I was the opening guest of the Hockey Writers Radio Show. This discussion was a bit more free flowingThis discussion was a bit more free flowing, going over Philadelphia, New Jersey, NY Rangers, and much more. My segment was for the first half hour, but stick around and listen to Scott Cullen, of TSN fame continue the conversation after I bowed out.

You can also check out the review of the new Hockey Prospectus annual by Hockey Writers’ Fantasy Analyst, Chris Wassel, here.

Finally, in last week’s Preseason Predictions roundtable, my random prediction was that there would be panic in Philadelphia after a slow start and people would find themselves unemployed. I was more correct than I thought. After scoring a grand total of three goals in their first three games, the Flyers find themselves with zero points and a new coach, as Peter Laviolette was let go today. Craig Berube will take over, although it is not yet known whether the appointment is to be permanent (so to speak) or only on an interim basis. To be clear, I do not think that Laviolette is to blame for the issues faced by the Flyers. On the one hand, the numbers from this year are from far too small a sample. Even though they are only averaging 24.3 shots per game, they should have scored at least twice more so far. They have enough talent to score more.

Make no mistake that any blame for failure by the Flyers to live up to expectations should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the man who built the under-performing rosters in the first place. As the saying goes, “you can’t make chicken soup out of chicken stuff.”
